What is a birth chart?
A birth chart, also called a natal chart, is a snapshot of the sky from where you were born at the time you were born. Astrologers divide the sky into 12 signs and note which sign each planet was in. The result is a personal map used for reflection and conversation.
It is a lens, and a fun one, but it is not science, and it cannot predict your future or anything that happens by chance.
Sun, Moon and Rising: what is the difference?
- Sun sign: the sign the Sun was in on your birthday. It is the one in the newspaper, and it describes your core identity and drive.
- Moon sign: the sign the Moon was in. Tradition links it with your emotions, habits and what helps you feel settled.
- Rising sign (ascendant): the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It is linked with first impressions and how you come across.
People often say the three together give a fuller read than the Sun sign alone. If you only know your Sun sign, the calculator above may surprise you.
Why birth time matters
The Sun takes about a month to change sign, so your date alone settles your Sun sign (apart from the day it changes). The Moon is quicker. It moves around 13 degrees a day and changes sign roughly every two and a half days, so on a day when it changes sign you need the time to know which one.
Your Rising sign is the most sensitive of all. It changes about every two hours as the Earth turns, which means two people born on the same day, in the same town, a few hours apart can have different Rising signs. If you do not know your birth time, leave it blank. Your Sun and Moon signs will still be useful, though the Rising sign will not be reliable. Your birth certificate or a parent may have the time.
The planets and what each covers
- Sun: identity and purpose.
- Moon: emotions, comfort and habits.
- Mercury: thinking and communication.
- Venus: love, taste and values.
- Mars: drive, energy and how you handle conflict.
- Jupiter: growth, optimism and learning.
- Saturn: discipline, limits and responsibility.
These are the meanings astrology assigns, and they are traditions, not facts about you. You can see how the planets are moving now on our Mercury retrograde page and our moon calendar.
How to read your results
Start with the three big signs: Sun, Moon and Rising. Read each one on its own, then look at how they sit together. A Sun in Leo with a Moon in Virgo, for instance, is traditionally described as warm in public and a bit more analytical underneath.
Then look at Mercury through Saturn. Each planet has its own sign, and astrologers read those as extra shades of personality: how you talk, what you value, how you push, and how you grow. Do not worry if some feel off. A chart is a set of themes, not a verdict, and different astrologers weigh them differently.
Planets sometimes appear to move backwards from Earth, which is called retrograde. If you want to know whether one was retrograde at your birth, an astrologer can check. Our calculator keeps to the signs.
How our calculator works
The calculator uses astronomy-engine, an open-source astronomy library, to work out where each body sat at your birth. We use the tropical zodiac, which is what most Western astrology uses and what the sign dates in newspapers follow.
The time you enter is local time at your birth place. The calculator converts it using the correct historical time zone for your city, including daylight saving as it was then, so a 1985 birth in Adelaide is handled differently from a 2005 birth. Planet positions are accurate to well under a degree. The Rising sign depends on an accurate birth time and place, so if your time is a guess, treat that result as a guess too.
Privacy: nothing leaves your browser
The calculation happens on your device. Your date, time and birth town are not stored and are not sent to us or to anyone else. Close the tab and it is gone.
Get a personal weekly plan
Once you know your signs, our Lucky Days section has a weekly page for each sign, with day-by-day notes on which days suit relaxed activities and which are better for resting. You can join BigRedPokie free to get your plan. Rest days are a feature, and we suggest a walk, the footy, cooking or a call to a mate. You can also see how your sign gets on with others on our compatibility page.
Pokies run on a random number generator (RNG), so every spin is an independent result that no date, sign or number can influence. Our plan is about pacing your week, never about winning.

Questions people ask
How do I find my Rising sign?
Enter your date of birth, your birth time and your birth town in the calculator above. The Rising sign is the sign on the eastern horizon at that moment, so it needs an accurate time. Your birth certificate may list it.
Is this birth chart calculator free?
Yes, it is free and has no sign-up. It runs entirely in your browser, so you do not need an account to use it.
Do you store my birth details?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, and your date, time and birth town are not stored or sent to us. Closing the tab clears them.
Can I use the calculator if I don’t know my birth time?
Yes. Leave the time blank to get your Sun sign and, in most cases, your Moon sign and the planets. The Rising sign needs an accurate time, so it will not be reliable without one.
How accurate is the calculation?
Planet positions are accurate to well under a degree, using the open-source astronomy-engine library and the tropical zodiac. The Rising sign is only as accurate as your birth time, and the calculator uses the historical time zone for your city.
Is a birth chart scientifically proven?
No. Astrology is a cultural tradition, not a science, and a birth chart cannot predict events or your future. The planetary positions are real astronomy, but the meanings are a matter of interpretation. Enjoy it as a fun lens.
